Selection of October 2017: Moment of Madness by Fred Bucheton

Moment of Madness by Fred Bucheton

Patagonia area is renowned for some of the most impressive mountains in the world. Amongst them, there is Fitz Roy Massif in Argentina and Cordillera Paine in Chile.
This picture was taken in April 2013 while staying at Hosteria Pehoe before my 6 day hike to the heart of the Torres del Paine National Park.
On this early morning, it was very cloudy and even rainy, so I didn't expected such a show. I still left the hotel before sunrise to get to the spot I located the day before. I tried several wide angle compositions, including rocks in the foreground and Lago Pehoe, but it was very dark, so I switched to telephoto lens.
Suddenly, the sun came through the thick clouds, illuminating the mountains and the sky in amazing red tones. As a result of rain and sunrise, there was a rainbow to the left of Paine Grande. Its position didn't balance the picture quite well, so I included in the frame the Cuernos del Paine. This was a long exposure shot using tripod and a neutral density graduated filter. In post-processing I cropped it a bit, decreased the overall exposure and enhanced the contrast to improve the impact of the image.
