Selection of May 2026: Untitled by Sandra Risi

by Sandra Risi

The photograph was taken in the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, in July 2023. It was taken intentionally rather than by chance, as I was specifically searching for the region’s distinctive black-maned male lions. My goal was to find a solitary male lion walking across an open area so that I could create a high-key wildlife image.

For this image, I wanted a clean and minimalist composition, so I waited for the lion to be isolated from distracting environmental elements and other animals. I also looked for a moment when the lion’s mouth was closed, which gave a calmer and more powerful expression. The main challenge was finding the right combination of position, background, and behavior. Overall, I was satisfied with the result and have no significant regrets about the choices made during the shoot.

I am happy to share my thoughts on post-processing, as I see photography as an end-to-end creative process. For me, post-processing is an integral part of the journey, allowing me to express my personal vision while remaining faithful to the reality of the scene. I always try to achieve as much as possible in-camera, but I also use post-processing to refine the image, enhance its impact, and bring out the mood and feeling I experienced when taking the photograph. The goal is not to alter reality, but to present it in a way that reflects my artistic interpretation.
