Endurance was captured in the backcountry of Katmai National Park during a two-week photographic expedition in the summer of 2025. The Katmai coast is defined by harsh, unpredictable weather, and this image was made in driving wind and rain, conditions that reflect the true character of the landscape. This photograph is part of a long-term series documenting a mother bear and her cubs over their first two years of life, before they separate and begin their independent journeys. A story I am working to shape into a book. The bear in this image, known as Sheli, named after the Shelikof Strait, embodies resilience. After losing a litter of quadruplets in 2023, she returned in 2025 with three cubs. Her story is one of perseverance and quiet strength. On the day the image was made, I was alone on the coastline due to the severe weather. Observing Sheli and her cubs digging for clams, I anticipated their movement and positioned myself ahead of them. A slower shutter speed of 1/160 allowed me to capture the rainfall, reinforcing the atmosphere of the moment and the environment they endure. My work is guided by how an image will translate to print. Although I shoot in color RAW, I often render my images in black and white to emphasize form, mood, and timelessness. Printing is a critical part of my process, revealing details and guiding final refinements. For me, a successful photograph is one that holds its presence and meaning over time. [+]
